SHOTGUN BALLISTIC BREACHING
Shotgun breaching is perhaps the primary role the shotgun is employed in for the military and the nations SWAT Teams. When done properly, the shotgun breach requires only a few seconds. The two standard techniques of shotgun breaching are the doorknob breach and the hinge breach. When attempting either technique, the gunner is announcing his presence by using the shotgun and is completely exposed to fire through the door. Therefore, exposure time must be minimized and the shotgun breacher must be ready to gain entry and return fire as quickly as possible.
The 12-gauge shotgun loaded with specialty breaching rounds can be used to breach most standard doors quickly. The military designation for such breaching ammo is M-1030. The exact composition of each company’s product varies, but in general consists of a compressed metallic powder and a binder such as wax, which forms a slug like projectile. These rounds are designed to disintegrate on impact with a door and impart all of its energy into the door, reducing over penetration concerns.
All ballisitic breaching should be performed using ballistic googles such has the ESS profile NVG.

Specialty Breaching rounds are availible to Law Enforcement and the Military only.

Organizations should consider using training aids as the Breaching Technology's Shotgun Breaching Door. Either door provides for a reusable training door that can be emplaced in a MOUT Site or MOUT LFX facility in support of all phases of training. Prior to procuring any breaching doors the command must do a risk assessment and is advised to coordinate their actions with the their Safety Office and their Range Division.
Breaching Technologies now offers the Shotgun Hinge Breaching Door a training door that simulates both lock and hinge breaching utilizing a shotgun. This door utilizes the BTI patent pending system to replicate real life situations through the use of engineered lock and hinge panels.
The BTI Shotgun Hinge Breaching Door offers realistic and affordable training for situations that involve inward opening doors for which the hinges are breached utilizing a shotgun. The Shotgun Hinge Breaching Door can be installed into a structure or utilized with the optional Free Standing Kit.
Up to 3 lock sets and 3 hinges can be simulated utilizing the patent pending system. This door can be reset in a matter of seconds, resulting in no training down time. The BTI Shotgun Hinge Breaching Door is highly cost effective when compared to the use of actual doors and jury rigged systems

The Non-Metallic Breaching load is intended for use against typical light to medium duty residential type doors, locksets and hinges. It is cast from a homogenous lightweight material intended to disintegrate on impact to minimize collateral damage or injury. Contact engagement requires use of a breaching stand-off device.
The Shackle Cutting load is intended to defeat heavy padlock shackles. Its metallurgy and design are intended to grip and cut through heavy shackles when using a notched breaching stand-off. This load poses a higher over-penetration and ricochet hazard than typical frangible breaching munitions, but can defeat locks, chain link and other barriers not generally addressable with a shotgun breaching system. The use of this load requires additional planning and training considerations.

ALS1210S Door Breaching Cartridge (Frangible Copper-Tin Slug)
This low cost highly effective device is a frangible projectile made of powdered copper and tin pressed into a single projectile. The door breaching cartridge produces an effective means of removing locks and hinges from metal or wooden doors constructed of materials up to 16 gauge steel. Limited projection of hazardous debris and collateral damage on the opposite side of the door is minimized.
